Do You Have Your Own Signature Health Coaching Program?
This is for you if you’re an integrative health practitioner or a health coach. You might already have heard about signature health programs but this is different. Let’s look into the details that you don’t get from reading email newsletters or surface level social media content.
If you’re about to create a signature health coaching program, you’re at the right page at the right time!
What if you already have a program? Then you can read this and use it as an audit to improve your program.
Signature Health Coaching Program Definition
How do we define a signature health coaching program? It’s the main program in your wellness coaching practice. If you have 3 to 4 signature programs, then none qualifies as a signature program.
This is the program that people associate you with and the program you offer most of the time. You just need one great signature coaching program and you’ll hit all your income goals. You’ll also enjoy your work because it’s less messy and less stressful.
You can have 2 to 3 options for your program. You don’t need 3 programs, 4 courses, 6 books and 12 lead magnets. Who has the time to create and promote them all? Spreading your attention too thin is causing you a lot of unnecessary stress in your health coaching practice. It’s a waste of time and it won’t help you earn more.
Assembling Is The Better Way To Create
You don’t have to create from scratch. That’s good news! Take what you learnt from your certification program, your own health journey, your unique personality and assemble all the pieces into your own unique signature health program.
Doesn’t matter if you have only 1 cert or you have 12 certs. Doesn’t matter if you’re newly certified or you’re experienced. Either way, having your own signature program will benefit you and your clients.
Assembling is easier than creating. It takes less time. The result is a program you’re proud to share because your clients get a superb experience while restoring their health. Yes, a signature health program can transform your clients’ health and elevate your wellness practice.
Before you can create a signature health coaching program, you need to specialize.
Wellness Specialization
If conventional medicine is full of specialists, wellness practitioners can specialize too. Here are some questions about specializing.
Is specializing limiting me?
When you specialize, you’re not limiting yourself. Instead, you’re focused on getting good at solving a specific health issue for a specific group of people.
Will I end up in a pigeon hole?
Maybe? Just remember, pigeon holes are stuffed with cash! Most people will never find out because they don’t go deep.
What about the non-ideal audience?
The non-ideal audience may want to work with you. If they fit into the processes of your signature health program, you can enroll them as your clients. If not, refer them to another practitioner.
Specialist Practitioner
When you solve a specific problem for a specific audience, you’re a specialist, not a generalist.
Let’s say someone you love (your child, spouse or parent) needs an emergency heart surgery to stay alive. Would you allow a general practitioner to perform the surgery? Or would you choose a practitioner whose specialty is cardiology?
You’ll get more referrals because others find it easy to explain what you do. Most people won’t know others with the exact specialty as you so they’ll refer their family and friends to you.
Are there fewer specialists than generalists? Do specialists charge more than generalists? Can you see why specialists are more valued than generalists?
Generalists: more options, more competitors, less demand.
Specialists: few options, few competitors, more demand.
By default, everyone knows about being a generalist but few people can understand the advantages of being a specialist. You learnt it here so you get it! It doesn’t take a lot of effort to specialize but so few people want to do that.
Premium Specialist
When you’re a specialist, your pricing goes from low to premium.
Many people think that a lower price means more people will buy. Too few people realized that selling a cheaper program takes the same effort as selling a premium program. You can charge 5 times more for a premium signature program compared to a cheaper program.
Cheaper Program: lower perceived value, lower-quality clients, tougher competition.
Premium Program: higher perceived value, higher-quality clients, little competition.
Where people put their money, there their heart will be. The ones who pay more money will pay more attention. These are the same people who get amazing results. You’re not the only getting benefits from charging a premium, your clients get benefits from investing a premium in themselves.
Clients who pay a premium price are the ones who are the easiest to work with. They’ll even give you feedback to improve your program. It’s also easier to work with fewer clients at a deeper level than to work with many customers at a surface level. (There’s a huge difference between clients who sign up for a premium program and customers who buy a low priced course.)
What exactly is a premium price? That’s a great topic for another blog post.
Signature Coaching Program Assembly
Help your ideal audience solve a specific health issue. That’s the starting point of creating or assembling your own signature health coaching program. Without specializing, there’s no way you can assemble or create a program that transforms the health of your clients.
Specific Audience
When you focus on a specific audience, it’s easier to understand them. When you understand them well, it’s easier to tailor your content and program to appeal to them.
Let’s say you help women lose weight. A busy mother in her 30s with young kids and a woman in her 60s both want to lose weight but their day looks very different. They have different health challenges too. When you’re not focused on either group, how are you able to create content that catches their attention?
Traits of an ideal audience to serve:
Traits of an ideal audience to serve:
- Reachable: You know where they hang out and you can reach them.
- Desire: They have a strong desire to solve their health issues.
- Money: They are willing to invest in their health.
You get to choose! Pick an audience you like to work with. They could be a version of you some years ago before you were a wellness practitioner. There could be common traits which makes it easier to connect with.
Specific Problem
When you focus on a specific chronic health problem, it allows you to go deeper and you don’t get bored. By specializing, you’re able to recognize patterns better. When you don’t specialize, there’s no way to differentiate yourself. Recognizing patterns also means you can coach people to get better results.
If you keep solving the same health issue for a specific audience, you’ll become an expert at it. You would also develop better processes to solve the problem faster with less friction. Before you know it, your reputation as the expert at solving a specific problem for a specific audience grows! It’s hard to get such a reputation if you didn’t specialize or niche down.
Traits of a chronic health problem to solve:
- Painful: The more painful (or inconvenient) the problem, the stronger the desire to solve it.
- Untreated: Conventional treatments didn’t work so they’re open to other ways.
- Demand: There must be many people who want to solve it.
You get to choose again! Pick a health issue that you’re interested in solving. If you’re not interested, you won’t enjoy your work. When you’re into a topic, you’re always curious and always looking for better ways to solve it.
Specific Transformation
When you know who your ideal audience is and what chronic health issue they want to solve, it’s easier to figure out what results they want for their health. If you’re not sure, you can always ask!
- Describe the transformation or outcome they’ll get when they work with you.
- Before working with you, they were [description of their pain].
- After working with you, they were [description of their transformation].
Talk about this as part of your content. When you describe their dream outcome better than they can describe it, you’ll build a strong connection with them and they’ll trust you.
Build a strong connection with your audience:
- Can you describe a day in their life? As if you wrote a page of their diary.
- Can you describe their perfect day? Put that thought into their mind and give them hope.
Develop Your Approach
Develop your approach or method to help them:
Examine their painful problems and look at the likely root causes.
- What do they need to learn?
- What do they need to do?
- What’s essential for them to learn and do?
- What’s optional for them to learn and do?
The essentials:
- Put aside everything that doesn’t contribute directly to the transformation.
- The only items left are the most essential for their transformation.
- Add these essential items into your approach or method.
Organizing the essentials:
- Outline your approach or method. (You can reorder the sequence later.)
- Create the content. (8 to 12 learning modules.)
- Organize your modules into 2 to 3 phases and name them. (Optional)
- Create the action tasks. (Keep it simple that even the beginners can follow.)
Signature Coaching Program Modules
Each essential item becomes a module and when you put all the modules together, you get the curriculum of your signature health coaching program.
Format:
- Write concise documents because it’s simple for you to create and easy for your clients to understand.
- Record audio because it’s easier than video and it’s convenient for your clients to listen to.
- Videos are great for demonstrating some movements, though they take longer to produce.
- You could shoot videos with slides but it takes lots of time and it can slow you down. I recommend you start with text and audio. At a later stage, you could consider doing video.
- Keep things simple first. You can make things look pretty after you enroll some clients. Now, we’re ready to assemble your program by creating one module at a time.
Files:
- Do not write in your client management app! Create your documents or content and save it in your cloud drive. That’s your primary copy. You always edit your primary copy before updating it in your client management system.
- In the future, if you choose to switch to another app or your app goes down, you still have a backup of your content.
- Think about how you want to name your folder and files to keep them organized. It’ll be easier for you to find your files and that would save you time and frustration. (Read that again!)
Module Template:
- Title your module. Keep it simple and easy to understand.
- Create an introduction. (3 to 5 minutes.)
- Explain the concept to help your client understand the action steps. (10 to 15 minutes.)
- Give clear and step-by-step action tasks. (10 to 15 minutes.)
Test Drive Your Modules:
Do the tasks on your own to test if you can sustain it over a few days. If not, simplify it. Imagine if you as a wellness practitioner or health coach find it hard, your clients will have even more difficulty. You want to give them easy wins and keep them engaged so they’ll get results.
Test your instructions by giving it to a family member or friend. If they can follow your instructions without having to ask you more questions, you did a great job! If they have questions, you’ll use it as feedback to improve your instructions.
Signature Coaching Program Timeline
How long does it take to create your signature coaching program? It depends on how many modules you want to add, how long each module is and the speed of your content production.
Write Onboarding Emails:
Write your onboarding emails. At the bare minimum, send a thank you email or shoot a thank you video right after your client makes the payments. For higher priced purchases, especially for a service people get buyers’ remorse. Your thank you email will assure they made the right choice and to remind them of the transformation they’re about to get! (Estimated Time: 1 to 2 Hours)
Create Your Modules:
- Write 8 to 12 module outlines. (Estimated Time: 1 to 2 Hours)
- Write or record 8 to 12 module content. (Estimated Time: 8 to 9 Hours)
- Create worksheets and documents. (Estimated Time: 2 to 3 Hours)
Timeline: If the estimated time is 15 – 16 hours.
- Set aside about 8 hours per week if you wish to complete it in 2 weeks.
- Set aside about 5 hours per week if you wish to complete it in 3 weeks.
- Set aside about 4 hours per week if you wish to complete it in 4 weeks.
Taking 2 to 4 weeks (without losing your precious sleep) to create your own signature health program, that’s so worth your time!
Feedback:
Gather feedback one module at a time. Create content based on your modules and outlines. Then share it with your potential clients. It can be on social media, email or anywhere else. (At this point, you only have your outlines but not the entire content.)
Ask people what questions they might have. Observe their responses. If they are confused about certain areas, you can clarify for them. Use their responses or feedback to edit your modules.
Find out what exactly they want to solve and you’ll know what modules to include and what to exclude. Your audience is now helping you create something that they would love. This increases the odds that they would want to work with you on their health. Why not? After all, they helped to contribute ideas to your signature coaching program.
Signature Coaching Program Launch
Create As You Go:
- You don’t have to wait until you create or edit everything before you launch.
- You could just enroll clients first then finish creating or editing before each call.
- As long as you have the outline of your modules ready, this would be simple to do.
Launch Your Beta Program:
- You could launch a discounted beta program. (Start with the people who gave you ideas.)
- You could also consider offering some time limited bonus content.
Your method is likely to work so you just need to figure out how you deliver a delightful experience.
Refund Policy:
- If you don’t wish to offer a refund, that’s okay. You don’t have to follow everyone else.
- You could refund within a certain number of days if they complete a certain number of modules.
- You can offer to give a refund on the first call if they don’t find it useful. (Most people would be so full of hope after the first call and they’re unlikely to ask for a refund!)
Whichever option you choose is fine as long as you decide ahead of time.
Signature Health Coaching Program Pro Tip:
After you create your signature program outline, create only your first module. Now, you go promote your program. Which means you tell people about your program and how it can help them.
When you talk about how your program can help them, you’ll get questions. These questions are their concerns and you can edit your program as their answers. Your audience is now helping you build your program to serve them!
What about the rest of the modules which you haven’t created? You can create them a week before the session. Creating them as you go is helpful when you don’t have many large time blocks to work on them!
Client Success
The ability to get clients to take consistent actions is a trait of an effective health coach. Your clients are paying you to help them get results so that’s what you want to do. Here are some ways you can help your clients stay on track and transform their health.
Set Expectations:
Set the expectations right from the start. Let your clients know what they need to get back their health. Some processes are uncomfortable and you can let them know ahead of time so they can prepare for it.
You need to do this early and often. It will help you attract your best clients and repel your worst ones. (Your worst clients could be another person’s best clients. The opposite is also true!)
You don’t have to wait till the client pays then you talk about expectations. You can talk about it in your content, mention it on the discovery and the onboarding emails. Also, if you use a contract, add it in.
Regular Check-Ins:
Regular check-ins show you care and this allows your clients to ask you questions if they have doubts. Clear their doubts and they’ll stick to your program instead of giving up.
It’s a great idea to pre-schedule your mid week check in emails. Then you just wait for replies. As always, their obstacles are your opportunity to improve your signature health program. That’s also your endless source of relevant content ideas!
Coaching Calls:
How about answering questions weekly or fortnightly live calls or videos? That’s how some wellness practitioners support their group coaching clients.
You just show up, answer some questions and you’re done. If you don’t know the answer to their question, you can go find out then get back to them.
Group Coaching:
If you do group coaching as your standard program. These ideas could help you earn more from the same batch of clients.
You could offer 1:1 sessions to group coaching clients for an additional cost. Keep it limited so you’ll have time for yourself.
Some clients will need a few 1:1 sessions and if you’re willing to do that, go ahead.
